Refined Shea Butter

Refined Shea Butter has the same application in cosmetics as crude shea butter. Crude (virgin) shea butter has a pungent and unpleasant smell and is, therefore, refined. After refinement it has a very slight yellow color and almost no odour. Used predominantly for skin care, refined shea butter is hailed for its protecting and emollient properties.

  • Shea (Butyrospermum parkii) grows in the semi-arid wooded savannah regions of tropical West and Central Africa. The dried fruit consists of a thin shell and egg shaped seed. The kernels contain about 50% of fat. Shea butter is obtained from kernels (containing 34-57% oil) that are crushed or ground in a mechanical press. In the past, fat was obtained by crushing the kernels, which were boiled in water. The fats that floated to the surface were then skimmed off. Refined Shea Butter is mechanically processed and refined. After refinement it has a very slight yellow color and almost no odour. As such it can be used in food and cosmetic products where the strong odour of crude shea butter is not desired.

It has many useful properties. It is extremely hydrating, anti-inflammatory, nutritious and creamy and rich with vitamins and antioxidants. It helps cell regeneration and capillary circulation. It nourishes the skin into deep layers and relieves many skin problems. This vegetable fat is edible and used as a cooking fat, in the manufacturing of margarine and as a substitute for cacao butter.

Refined Shea Butter conforms to the European Pharmacopoeia and can be used for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food products.
